WIPs

At the moment I am working on a lot of things simultaneously. But nothing of the knitting is finished and done so that I could show it to you already. There´s this cardigan that is just lacking some buttons before it is ready to wear and some smaller projects are still on the needles.

The blanket is growing steadily. It should be ready for cutting any day now:

Im Moment habe ich einige Dinge parallel in Arbeit. Vom Gestrickten ist noch nichts so weit, dass ich es schon zeigen könnte. Einer Strickjacke fehlen die Knöpfe und einige kleinere Projekte sind noch auf den Nadeln. 

  Die Patchworkdecke wächst langsam und ich bin demnächst so weit, dass ich schneiden kann:

Then I have been weaving some more. I have been trying all the techniques of Ananda´s great weaving book that I am interested in exploring at the moment. Originally I had planned to strictly follow the guidance of the book, but I found I couldn´t do that. There were just too many ideas popping up which I could not suppress. So I made up my own projects but used the techniques explained. 
 There are still some chapters of the book left, for example one about double weaving, another about weaving on a backstrap loom and finally a chapter about weaving on a foot treadle loom. 

I am showing you the woven pieces as they look now, freshly cut from the loom. I will still do some finishing work on them.

For the first project I made a quick sketch of six sqares. The idea was to try different things in each box. I tried hard not to be too make any even lines and 90 degree angles which worked a little too well I am afraid. And you can see that the edges - which are a challenge to any beginner - were rather smooth until I reached the last rows. The fabric is appallingly tight there.

Dann hab ich ein wenig gewebt. Ich habe endlich all die Techniken aus Anandas großartigem Buch ausprobiert, die mich im Moment interessieren. Eigentlich hatte ich mir vorgenommen, mich genau an das Buch zu halten und alle beschriebenen Projekte zu arbeiten. Aber dann kamen mir einfach zu viele Ideen und ich habe meine eigenen Projekte kreiert. 

 Einige Kapitel habe ich ganz ausgelassen, zum Beispiel über das Doppeltweben, Bändchenweben und Weben am Webstuhl.

Ich zeige euch die Projekte so, wie sie im Moment ausseheh, frisch vom Webrahmen geschnitten. Natürlich werden die losen Kettfäden noch verknotet und einige letzte Verschönerungen angebracht.

Für das erste Projekt habe ich eine schnelle Skizze mit sechs Kästchen gemacht. In jedem Kästchen habe ich etwas anderes ausprobiert. Dabei hab ich mir Mühe gegeben, dass alles nicht zu gerade und symmetrisch aussieht, was wohl leider etwas zu gut gelungen ist.
Mit den Kanten war ich diesmal sogar ganz zufrieden, bis ich zum obersten Teil gekommen bin. Dort zieht sich das Gewebe wirklich unschön zusammen.

Tut mir leid für die unscharfen Bilder. Ich finde es bei diesem Wetter schwer, gute Fotos zu machen.

Next I took a break from trying new things and worked this small hommage to my favorite technique so far: Kelim. It will become a small table runner and the loose warp threads will be knotted together to fix the weaving. Gentle steam blocking should work well to flatten the whole thing.

Als nächstes habe ich meiner bisher  liebsten Technik ein Projekt gewidmet. Kelim webt sich schnell und ist sehr effektvoll. Ich werde diese kleine Übung als Tischläufer verwenden, nachdem die Fäden verknotet sind. Ich denke, dass vorsichtiges Dämpfen ihn gut glätten sollte.

I liked kelim so much that the next project also uses that technique. I remembered a sketch I had made for a nameplate for my parents a few years ago. I imaged that it would make a nice woven sign for the door to my flat.

Diese Technik hat mich so schnell nicht losgelassen. Und ich habe mich an eine Skizze erinnert, die ich mal für ein tönernes Türschild gemacht habe. Gewebt wäre das Schild perfekt für meine Wohnungstür.

 

For finishing I will probably add some embroidery to make its letters more readable and a small frame using roots.

Zum Abschluss werde ich wahrscheinlich noch ein paar Stickereien anbringen, damit die Schrift lesbarer wird und ein Rahmen aus Wurzeln wäre perfekt, denke ich.

Next I tried a few new things again. As you can see I am still struggling with the tension of my weaving. For some reason it is always the very last inch of the project that is giving me trouble.

Dann war es wieder Zeit für ein paar neue Techniken.  Die Fadenspannung macht mir immer noch Probleme, wie man auf dem Bild gut sehen kann. Aus irgendeinem Grund ist es immer der oberste Abschnitt, der sich zusammenzieht.

For the trunk of the tree I used some extra threads as tight warp threads. And the leaves are loops pulled through the fabric. I am very happy with the plasticity of these two techniques. But especially the trunk and roots were also very time-intense and so I might just stitch them on afterwards the next time. 

Der Baumstamm besteht aus Fäden, die eng aneinandergelegt wie ein Kettfäden verwebt wurden und die Blätter sind Schlingen, die druch das Gewebe gezogen wurden. Mir gefällt, dass das Ergebnis so plastisch ist. Allerdings waren besonders der Baumstamm und die Wurzeln sehr zeitintensiv, eventuell sticke ich sie das nächste Mal einfach auf.

 

In the stripes at the bottom of this project I explored different techniques. Changing colours every row results in vertical stripes. Knots and loops add to the interest of the weaving. And soumak weave results in beautifully neat lines. The possibilities seem to be endless.

In den Streifen habe ich verschiedene Techniken ausprobiert. Wenn man die Farbe jede Reihe wechselt, erhält man senkrechte Streifen. Man kann Knoten oder Schlingen einweben oder mit der Soumak Technik, bei der die Kettfäden mit dem Schussfaden umwickelt werden klare Linien erzeugen. Die Möglichkeiten scheinen endlos.
